SOCRATES

Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher renowned as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Living in Athens during the 5th century BCE, he is best known for his Socratic method, a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue aimed at stimulating critical thinking and illuminating ideas. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Socrates did not write down his teachings; much of what is known about him comes from the works of his students, like Plato. His philosophical explorations centered on ethics and epistemology, questioning the nature of knowledge, virtue, and justice. Despite his contributions, he was sentenced to death for allegedly corrupting the youth of Athens and impiety, ultimately choosing to drink hemlock rather than flee into exile.
